Sumba Ikat Hinggi with Horsemen and Roosters

This is a finely woven Sumba ikat textile, a traditional hinggi (man's wrap), measuring 250 cm in length and 98 cm in width. The cloth features four horizontal pictorial bands alternating between deep indigo-black and rust-red grounds. Two bands depict mounted horsemen — dark figures on the red field, light figures on the lower red field — rendered with the characteristic soft-edged detail of warp ikat technique. A central dark band showcases three large white roosters with striped tail feathers and red combs, flanked by smaller animal figures. The textile terminates in a hand-knotted black fringe, and the color palette of indigo, rust, and undyed cotton is consistent with traditional Sumba natural dye practices.
