Ikats
The ikats of Sumba, an island in Indonesia, are among the most important and symbolic textiles of the region. They are far more than decorative fabrics – they embody cultural identity, social belonging, and spiritual meaning. Traditionally, they are used in ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, and rites of passage, and are often considered prestige objects and gifts in social exchange.

The production process involves an elaborate resist technique: First, the patterns are bound into the warp threads using palm fibers and dyed with natural dyes – a process repeated several times to create complex layers of color. Only then is the fabric woven on traditional looms. The motifs – including animals, ancestral figures, and geometric patterns – reflect cosmological concepts and social structures. Each ikat thus not only tells a story but also preserves the cultural heritage of the Sumbanese people for generations to come.
The ikats on this page were acquired by us in 1973 on the island of Sumba (Indonesia).
